The degradation of polymer may occurs due to various reasons, such as,
• Thermal oxidation degradation due to high processing temperature.
• Thermal oxidation degradation due to prolong exposure to adverse atmospheric condition.
• Thermal oxidation degradation due to repeated processing.
• UV or Photo-oxidation degradation due to prolong exposure to sunlight.
Degradation takes place due to heat or light or due to both in presence of oxygen. Such type of degradation process is an auto-oxidative, free radical chain reaction. Once the chain reaction starts, hydroperoxide starts forming, which are unstable to heat, light and metal ions.
Antioxidants are compounds that can interfere with the degradation chain reaction and reduce the period of degradation of polymers. Types of Antioxidants used are,
The phenolic base complex compounds when added into polymers, interrupt the primary oxidation cycle and delay the oxidation process. Primarily such types of Antioxidants are added into polymers during manufacturing process. The quantity is sufficient for initial processing.
The phospite base complex compounds when added into polymers interrupt the oxidative cycle and act as harmful peroxide decomposers.
The choice of Antioxidant depends on a number of factors, such as, type of base polymer, desired performance during processing and application.
